We all know about the fantastic work The Engine Room does to support the community in Tottenham Hale but did you know about the new café on site?

Hale Delights is run by Figen Akgul who also manages the popular Weighbridge Café in the area. We caught up with Figen to find out all about the café’s tasty offering.

Tell us about how you came to open your new café at The Engine Room?

The nearby Weighbridge Café in the industrial estate in Tottenham has been in my family for over 20 years and I have been managing it for the past three years. I then heard through Lee Valley Estates that the Engine Room café was vacant, which I saw as a great opportunity to expand my business in the area.

What’s the name and the inspiration behind the café?

The café is called Hale Delights and the inspiration for this was obviously the location with ‘Hale’ and delights came from my Turkish heritage, Turkish delights!

What food and drink do you offer?

We’ve recently launched a new menu, previously we only sold light breakfasts and lunches but now we’ve expanded to offer a variety of options from traditional breakfasts, vegetarian and vegan options to a touch of luxury with poached salmon and hollandaise.

We also now serve hot lunches and dinners which are inspired by my family’s Turkish heritage. All our food is homemade, and we take great care to ensure our products are sourced locally and organically. We have a great lamb chop meal, gourmet burgers and traditional Turkish food. We also have plenty of veggie options for lunch and dinner too including our homemade gourmet vegetarian burger.

We’re now looking to expand our desserts and milkshake options, so watch this space!

What are your opening hours?

We’re currently open Tuesday – Friday from 8am until 6pm and then from 9am until 5pm Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday. As demand grows, we will cater for this with longer opening hours. We’re also looking to host events in the evenings such as for Valentine’s Day when we will be open for people to book for dinner and enjoy some live music.

As the summer draws in we’ll hopefully have an alcohol license and plan to stay open for those lighter evenings for visitors to have a nice glass of wine and enjoy the summer breeze.

We also do event catering, for local businesses for working lunches or for parties, we are able to supply a whole host of tasty options! There’s also a space at our café that people can rent for events and we can supply the food.

What are the most popular items on the menu?

At the moment we have a vegetarian Gozleme which is a traditional savoury Turkish flatbread which is proving extremely popular and a Lahmacun which is a Turkish meat topped pizza.

My personal favourite currently has to be the gourmet burgers, both the vegetarian and meat options are amazing!

What do you love about being in Tottenham?

It’s so vibrant with lots to do and everything you could ever need around you. It’s one of the best areas of the capital, we’re situated so close to wildlife and also within easy reach of the centre. Lee marshes are an incredible place to have a stroll through and be so close to nature.
