#HoxtonHotspots - Life’s more fun with the Geffrye
As we celebrate five years of Anthology, we are in search of what home truly means to Londoners. Throughout the next year, we will be celebrating home and it all kicks off on 18th September at our special Stories of Home event at Hoxton Press.
And luckily, down the road from Hoxton Press is the Geffrye Museum, which is dedicated to exploring the changing nature of home and home life dating back from the 1600s.
The museum is an invaluable asset to the community and has hosted plenty of fun and engaging events throughout the summer, with more lined up in the coming months.
We recently caught up with the team from the Geffrye and in our first piece with them we’ll be exploring all the exciting events taking place.
You’ve held many exciting events throughout the summer - can you tell us what’s coming up in the autumn and winter?
Although the main museum and period gardens are closed during current redevelopment works, we continue to run special events in our front garden. These range from the food and drink pop-ups such as the recent and hugely popular Beautiful Allotment, to family days, performances and free children’s activities.
Upcoming highlights include:
A chance to meet Wright and Wright: The architects behind the (Unlocking the Geffrye) redevelopment of the museum will give a unique insight into the transformation of the museum as part of Open House weekend. Saturday 22nd September between 11am-4pm.
Luna open air cinema screenings: For all those cinema fans, the museum will be holding its own open-air cinema screenings. On Wednesday 26th September, the 1986 musical fantasy film Labyrinth, starring David Bowie will played. And then on Thursday 27th September, Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 American romantic dark fantasy drama, The Shape of Water, will be shown.
Hoxton Harvest Ceilidh: On Saturday 13th October we officially welcome the new season with the Harvest Ceilidh, a traditional Gaelic tradition. If you love music then this is the place to be, as top Ceilidh band Fiddle Paradiddle will perform live music. Other fun offerings include crafts, games, hot mulled wine and delicious hot food on offer courtesy of The Cheese Truck.
