The Early Bird catches the worm
Situated in the heart of Wembley, you will find Christine Coke, the passionate owner of The Early Bird, offering an array of delicious food from around the globe.
It is the perfect place to visit #WhenInWembley and is one of the most popular independent business which is also proud to cater for small and large events in the local community and beyond.
We hear from Christine, previous city worker who took the plunge to start up her own business empire in 2003 to serve up the best jerk chicken this side of town!
What inspired you to create The Early Bird, and what sets you apart from other caterers?
Having worked in the city for over 20 years within banking and finance, I wanted a different pace of life.
I’m also a qualified Montessori School teacher so I did initially look at opening a nursery however after not being able to find a suitable place, I turned to my passion for cooking. Having worked in central London, I had noticed that there was a big difference between the eatery standards and offerings in the city compared with outer city so was spurred on by the desire to create something on par with the quality in the city.
This led to the launch of The Early Bird in Wembley in 2004 and here we provide English and Caribbean dishes. We see such an array of people visit and enjoy our food and we love that The Early Bird is truly fitting with Wembley’s own unique culture and personality.
As well as the restaurant, we have the events side of the business too which I absolutely love. I enjoy talking and working with people to create a truly outstanding event together to fit their requirements and needs.
We have also recently expanded the business and have a unit where it enables us to cater for our larger events. This has meant that we have invested in a jerk pan meaning that we can cook up authentic jerk chicken all year round! We are also looking into the option of offering our food as takeaway via Deliveroo so watch this space if you are ever craving some of our flavour packed food from the comfort of your home!
What are some of the memorable events you’ve catered for?
We are proud to offer such a huge range of food to showcase the amazing diversity we have in the community in Brent which has seen Early Bird cater events for 1 to 1,000 people not only for the local neighbourhood but for all over the country from all backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.
We have catered for dinner parties, weddings, Indian events, funerals – you name an event type and we’ve most probably catered for it! I’ve even catered for popular artists who are performing at the Wembley arena and o2 Hammersmith.
It was also great catering for Anthology’s Big Lunch event in 2017, which brought together the whole community to enjoy a day packed full of good food, family fun and entertainment.
At events we offer anything our customers could possibly desire providing food from around the globe, whether that’s American, Indian, Caribbean or English. Small and larger events have seen us cooking up a storm of hot dogs and burgers to jerk chicken and curry to a roast dinner with all trimmings.
We also work with the local council to provide meals on wheels for the local community day centres and are proud to offer such a huge range of food to showcase the amazing diversity we have in the community in Brent.
Are there any particular favourites on the menu?
Our curry dishes are a big hit whether that’s mutton curry, chicken curry or our special vegan curry. Our jerk chicken is also a stable favourite!
We ensure all of our dishes are made from good quality, natural ingredients and avoid adding any unnecessary additives or oils with all of our food being MS free. We also endorse supporting local suppliers so buy our produce as close to Brent as possible, whenever we can.
What do you love most about Wembley, and how has it changed in recent years?
I grew up and went to school in Brent, so it was the perfect place to start up my business as people knew me and I had that local support from the start. In fact, I have catered for the teachers at my old secondary school which was a trip down memory lane.
I now live in Harrow however; I chose to launch my business in Wembley as I love the diverse culture within the community. I have seen a change to the area in recent years with more homes popping up and businesses coming to the area especially with the recent opening of Boxpark which is naturally bringing more people to Wembley.
Are there any hidden gems around Wembley, which you would recommend?
For me, I would always visit a local, independent business and there are some fantastic places in Wembley offering really amazing service/products for a much reasonable price in comparison to some of the chains in the area.
So, after a visit to see us at Early Bird, I would recommend checking out the Sports Bar, Blue Check and The Tavern Bar.
