Arts & Culture

Deptford X Contemporary Arts festival

Since 1998, Deptford has been home to the annual Deptford X Contemporary Arts festival. Inspired by the cultural heritage and creative talent within the area, the festival is famous for its wide range of art – from builders dancing on rooftops to schoolchildren’s creations showcased on hoardings.

With Goldsmiths nearby, Deptford has a thriving, creative community of musicians, artists and fashion designers. Local galleries, studios, record shops and venues all lend their support, helping to make the area one of London’s cultural centres.

Schools & Education

From nurseries, primary and secondary schools, to sixth form colleges and universities, options for education
in the area are plentiful.

In particular, there’s Goldsmiths, University of London with its world-leading degrees in the arts and humanities; Trinity Laban, the UK’s only conservatoire of music and contemporary dance and the University of Greenwich, located
in the majestic grounds of the Old Royal Naval College.

As for Deptford’s primary, secondary and further education schools, several have earned an ‘Outstanding grade’ from Ofsted.

Brockley Brewery

Brockley Brewery in Brockley has exceeded the expectations of the seven friends who set up the company in 2013. The friends who all live locally to Deptford had the idea to create a business to bring the local community together. They set up shop in a disused builder’s workshop on Harcourt Road and began to brew beer from the best malt, hops and yeast available. Three years on and Brockley Brewery has four popular beers it sells direct to customers, which are stocked at a selection of local restaurants and bars.

Head brewer, Joe Ringwood is a born and bred South-East Londoner: “Brockley Brewery is about local beer for local people. Brewed with love in SE4, the beer is available only in a three to four mile radius. It’s very important for us to be a pillar in the community. It’s a lovely place for people to come by and have a drink and a chat.”

Joe’s background is in teaching and he has brought these skills into the brewery, setting up the Brockley Brewing School. This is a one day course that teaches foundation level brewing skills for beginners. Brockley Brewery also donates all the spent grain and hops to the local Brockley allotment so they can use it to grown their fruit and vegetables.
