Making a difference in the communities we build in and supporting local business, charities and schools comes hand in hand for us when creating new homes across London.
From hosting photography competition, providing road safety vests in support of Walk to School Week and sponsoring summer fetes to donating a collection of brand new books, we have been lucky enough to enjoy a good relationship with Ferry Lane Primary School which is nearby to our Hale Works development in Tottenham Hale.
Just before the school breaks up for their highly anticipated summer holiday, we hear from Lisa Rawashdeh, who is the Headteacher at the community-focused school…
Can you tell us a little more about Ferry Lane Primary School?
We are a small, one-form entry school in the heart of a local community. We have just under 200 pupils including a nursery. We had an Ofsted inspection last year and continue to be a ‘good’ school but are always striving to raise standards and challenge ourselves. Our school values are important to us and underpin everything we learn here at Ferry Lane. These are: resilience, responsibility, respect and teamwork.
What three words would you use to describe Ferry Lane Primary School?
Warm, determined, community-focused
What extra curriculum do you offer to pupils?
There are a lot of opportunities for pupils to enrich their school life including joining our school council, taking scooter and cycling training or joining our other clubs. We offer a range of different activities – including football, multi sports, netball, basketball and dance
We also run a journalism club, cookery club, gardening club and offer musical instrument lessons.
Throughout the year pupils in all year groups enjoy school trips both locally and further afield in central London. Every year our year 6 pupils have the opportunity to go on a residential trip to an activity centre in Wales.
What events do you have coming up this year?
We have recently enjoyed our summer fete which is our biggest event and raises the most money for our school. We had a Christmas Fair for the first-time last year which was very successful, so we plan to make this an annual event.
Our PTA are very committed and also run smaller events throughout the year including discos and international food sharing afternoons. We also enjoy celebrating world book day as well as one-off event to raise money for charities.
What does the future look like for Ferry Lane Primary School?
The future is exciting. There is so much going on at the moment in Tottenham Hale. With new housing, improved transport and more open spaces all on the way it’s becoming an even more attractive place to live.
There are already a lot of young families and new businesses moving into Tottenham and we look forward to being a part of a growing and thriving area of London. So overall the future feels positive!
What do you love most about working in Tottenham?
Tottenham is a busy and challenging environment to work in but I’m proud of what our small school is achieving. We have high standards for our teaching and high expectations for our pupils and we are looking forward to what the regeneration will mean for Tottenham.
Our school serves a very diverse community but everyone in it works together to support the school and all its events and activities. It’s wonderful to see so many engaged parents getting involved in what we do in school.
What does home mean to you?
Home is where I unwind after a busy day at work and spend time with my family. Home is the place where I most want to be and it reflects the tastes and experiences of me and my family. It is a place I can be comfortable, happy and at ease.
